MASTER’S PROGRAM–GERONTOLOGICAL/ADULT NURSE PRACTITIONER

The Hunter Bellevue School of Nursing of The City University of New York offers an adult/gerontological nurse practitioner program leading to a Master of Science degree in Nursing. The 42 credit program prepares nurses to assume a leadership role in adult/gerontological nursing and primary care for adults/older adults in the community and in a variety of health care settings. The student has five years to complete degree requirements. Most courses are offered in the late afternoons and evenings. Graduates of the program are eligible for certification as nurse practitioners by New York State Education Department and by specialty organizations. The school is accredited by CCNE.

Course of Study
The program consists of nursing core and advanced practice core courses shared with other master’s degree students and specialization courses emphasizing normal aging, primary health care, case management, health maintenance, and management of common problems found in the elderly. Specialization and elective courses provide a multidisciplinary approach to primary care. Preceptored experiences in leading health care institutions known for education, service and research in aging are offered each semester for a total of 735 clinical hours. Subspecializations in Nursing Persons with HIV/AIDS and Nursing Education are also available.

Requirements for Admission
In addition to the graduate admission requirements of Hunter College, students seeking matriculation in the School of Nursing must meet the following requirements:
1. Completion of an accredited baccalaureate program in nursing with a GPA of 3.0.
2. License and current registration to practice professional nursing in New York State.
3. Completion of a basic statistics course or its equivalent. Applicants not fulfilling this requirement may be admitted on condition that they complete a statistics course during their first semester.
4. Preference may be given to applicants to nurse practitioner programs for fulltime
study who have at least two years of prior relevant clinical experience and to applicants for parttime study who have at least one year of prior relevant clinical experience and who are continuing professional nursing employment in the specialty while accumulating credits.

The specific courses that make up the gerontological/adult nurse practitioner specialization are outlined below. Faculty advisors help students plan the academic program and sequences best suited to their individual needs.

751 Advanced Health Assessment 3 cr. Specialization Courses (18 credits)
755 Primary Care Nursing: I 5 cr.
757 Primary Care Nursing: II 5 cr.
768 Primary Care Nursing: III 5 cr.
769 Gerontological NP Practicum 3 cr. Elective (3cr): Select courses such as
